William Steinman retired from the practice of law at the beginning of 2023. Mr. Steinman provided advice to multinational companies regarding the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (the “FCPA”) and other anti-corruption laws for over 29 years.
Mr. Steinman’s practice focused primarily on FCPA issues in the aerospace and defense and food industries, and on the engagement of overseas sales representatives, consultants, distributors/resellers, and logistics service providers. Mr. Steinman was frequently called upon to assist clients with respect to internal investigations and compliance reviews, and he regularly advised clients in the negotiation and fulfillment of foreign offset requirements. He also represented sovereign governments in West Africa and the Caribbean regarding anti-corruption and development matters.
Mr. Steinman continues to serve as a senior editor of the FCPA Blog, an online source for FCPA news and developments. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Steinman was an adjunct professor at Roger Williams University School of Law, where he taught advanced FCPA seminars, and at George Washington University Law School, where he taught a course on international negotiation for many years. He continues to teach a seminar regarding anti-corruption compliance at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law.
He previously served as Vice Chair of the ABA International Section’s Aerospace and Defense Industries Committee. Between 2003 and 2007, Mr. Steinman served on the Board of Directors of TRACE International, a non-profit association that specializes in promoting anti-corruption compliance in international business. In 2011, Mr. Steinman was a delegate to the World Justice Forum in Barcelona, Spain. His views on anti-corruption matters have been sought by numerous legal and compliance publications, including the Legal Times, Law360, and Corporate Counsel, and Mr. Steinman has appeared as a guest on MSNBC to discuss anti-corruption laws.
Mr. Steinman received his J.D. from the Harvard Law School in 1993, and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Vermont in 1990.
He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
